Get to know Tempe


Located in Maricopa county with a population of 161,719, is the city of Tempe, Arizona. Tempe is located in the area known as the East Valley and, and was home to US Airways corporate headquarters until the year 2013 when the headquarters changed location to Fort Worth, Texas. Arizona State University is also located here in Tempe. Students wishing to attend the acclaimed University appreciate the city’s close proximity to the nearby city of Phoenix. This area was abandoned by settlers in the 15th century. In 1865 Fort McDowell was established in this area, in a locating now approximately 25 miles from downtown Tempe. The US military members, as well as Hispanic migrant workers were hired to support and raise up the area with buildings and agriculture and formed the first permanent valley in this community. Hayden’s Ferry and San Pablo were the two establishments that were settled. Darrell Duppa is given the credit for naming Tempe in the year 1879. Arizona State University’s roots actually took place in the 1800s with the original name of Territorial Normal School. Tempe was incorporated as a city in the year 1894. A close suburb to Phoenix and a center for education Tempe has continued to grow and thrive. Many fortune 500 companies are now headquartered in Tempe. The Fiesta Bowl also called Tempe home for many years. The Insight Bowl, also known today as the Cactus Bowl is also hosted in the bustling community. Rich in pioneering history, and education opportunity Tempe is a city worth seeing.
